Wait out the storm in Watersong... (Open!)
Lara watched the weather closely. Looked like it was going to be a rough night. The storm had swept in a little further down the coast and it was headed their way. The bar wasn't completely full but storms either cleared out the patrons or brought them. Judging by the steadily building trickle, this was a 'bring them in' kind of night.

Stepping behind the bar, Lara grinned at Michael. "Might be busy. Better get some vodka on ice...I think snowy cocktails are going to be in demand tonight." Michael only grunted and sighed in a put upon way. She laughed and went back to her stool at the end of the bar looking out over the filling dancefloor.
[ooc: feel free to pitch up and enjoy the storm!]

"What are ya doin' here?" Davin gapes at him and sets his drink down, stepping up to him. "Did ya drive here? In a snowstorm?" He laughs incredulously and pokes him in the chest. "Ya gave me shit for walkin' two blocks in some flurries but ya drove your car from the forest in a damn blizzard?"
no subject
"Hey, I am a officer. I am trained for emergency situations," he protests, and then Davin is poking him in the chest. "Ow! Why are you----"
Okay, the weather was pretty bad outside, and he had to drive like a turtle inching along the roadways until he came to Watersong. But he was fine and never in true danger because the roads were empty as most of the town had taken heed to their cautious warnings to stay the hell at home.
He crosses his arms over his chest, sticking his chin out. "I was fine. Thank you," he grumps. "As you can see."
no subject
"'Cause you're a hypocrite, man!" Davin laughs and pokes his chest again before pulling his hand away. "But I'm glad you're here."
And yeah, he really does look fine. Like really fine.
"Wait." Davin narrows his eyes at James and reaches up to tap at his temple, just barely resisting the urge to see if his hair is as soft as it looks. "Can ya still hear what I'm thinkin'? 'cause I've had some whiskey an' I can't be held responsible for what my brain thinks about your ass in those jeans."
He blinks owlishly and then blushes. "Whoops."

James chuckles nervously when Davin asks if he can still read his mind and taps at his temple. When his powers had worn off, James went through some emotional ups and downs, and he had hid in his house until he felt like himself again. Because for a couple days he really really didn't, and that was in addition to the crazy part of suddenly being able to hear people's thoughts. He was actually thankful and relieved it was over.
However, there is no changing what he heard from Davin's mind. To be polite he hadn't brought the subject up because even though James could hear them they were still Davin's private thoughts. But now....
"No, it wore off a few days ago," he explains looking at him, more curiously. He glances away after a second or two. "I thought I misunderstood when I could---" He gestures at Davin for no reason. "Can I ask you something?" But he doesn't give Davin enough pause to answer. "Why do you even like me? I am not, well, fun or anything."
And Davin is very friendly and happy and easy going, and James is grumpy and his idea of fun is work. His friends even think he's no fun. They tell him so all the time.

Davin gives him a relieved smile, but the feeling doesn't last too long. His cheeks heat up substantially and he swallows hard. So apparently they're not just going to forget it ever happened.
"Well, uh." He frowns when James says he isn't fun and then finishes off the last of his whiskey. "C'mon."
He curls his fingers around James' wrist and leads him over towards the booths lining one wall where it's a little quieter. He waits for James to slide in and then sits across from him, frowning down at the tabletop and trying to make himself stop blushing. "Well, um. First off, I'm not like, pinin' for ya or anythin'. It's just - I don't know. You've been really sweet to me."
Of course James doesn't get it, because he didn't mean to charm Davin like he has. Because he doesn't feel the same. It's not anything Davin didn't already know, but it still stings. He came here to get away from feeling sad and alone, and he's just really not in the mood to be let down easy. But James asked, so Davin will answer.
"Well, I mean, at first ya were kind of a jerk, y'know?" Davin smiles a little and bites his lip, looking up at him. "An' then ya were still kind of a jerk. But then ya came t'Mira's party just 'cause I asked, an' then ya taught me t'waltz, just 'cause I asked. An' it was nice. It was fun. Kinda like somethin' out of a movie, y'know? That shit doesn't happen t'me."
God, he's blushing so hard. How pathetic. "An' after I was attacked, you were so great t'me. Ya cut out of work which I know was a big deal an' ya stayed with me an' made me feel better. It was really sweet. You've been sweet."
He shrugs awkwardly and looks up at him, lower lip trapped between his teeth for a moment. "An' I know ya didn't mean it like that, an' ya were jus' bein' a good friend. But you're so gorgeous an' it was just really hard not t'swoon a bit."
If the floor could just swallow Davin up right now, that'd be great. God, how embarrassing. "I didn't mean for ya t'find out, an' I'm sorry if I've made ya uncomfortable. I'll get over it."
His cheeks are still pink and he swallows hard as he looks up at James helplessly. He knows this isn't going to happen, just like nothing can happen with Ryder, but he still doesn't want to hear it.

He isn't even sure why he's nervous. Maybe he simply doesn't want to hurt Davin's feelings or say something stupid because he is fully capable of that if history is any indication. Or maybe it's something else. He's had several days to think through all possible scenarios when it comes to this Davin thing. Even though it seems very cut and dry, he's either interested too or he's not. However, he is so bad at dating and relationships and feelings, he still isn't completely sure how he feels.
That's why he lets Davin talk without interruption. No matter what he heard while under the influence of that stupid magic potion, he still never expected such a detailed answer, or any answer. Or rather any answer to involve all the times he thought he was being a jerk or making an idiot of himself or just being himself. His grumpy, no-fun, workaholic self. And somehow all of that, James being James, is why Davin had a crush on him? It's very strange to think that all the stuff James thought was wrong with him, were swoon-worthy...
James collects himself enough to respond though it takes him a few seconds because he doesn't want to take advantage of Davin's open honesty by say something he doesn't mean to say. "Davin, I don't wanna lie to you. I didn't mean any of those things like that, but that's because I'm really terrible at this---" He gestures at the space between them. "I really am. Seriously. And I don't even go on dates with people. Ask my brother, it's been like over a year. I just...I dunno...I work. That's really sad----" He frowns at himself and then shakes his head because he's getting off track.
"That's not the point. What I'm trying to say is it didn't make me uncomfortable or anything. It just made me think," he says, looking up at Davin. He pauses for a moment, but he decides to just go through with the idea he's been thinking about for as many days as he's known Davin might be an option. "I don't know if now is a good time, but I wanted to ask you something else. My father is forcing me and Daniel to attend a formal dinner. It's still a few night's away, so it's not last minute. But I'm supposed to take a date, and I think I'd really like if you'd go with me."
He takes a breath because that was a lot to say without exactly coming up for air. "You know, as my date."
no subject
Okay, that is so not what Davin was expecting.
He figured he'd get let down easy. James would be nice about it, no doubt. He was bracing himself for you're a nice kid, but...
Instead he got this.
"Wait, like your date date?" Davin sort of gapes a little and the blush on his cheeks flushes anew. He swallows hard and bites his lip, looking up at James from under his eyelashes. "Ya wanna date me?"
no subject
"Yes, like, my date," he says, nodding. "I know I was a jerk when we met, and I'm glad you were able to look past my supremely bad social skills to give me another chance. Because I would really like to take you out to dinner..."
"Family dinner aside. That's going to be awkward and terrible. But I do really need a date to that too."
no subject
"Awkward an' terrible, huh? That's what you're puttin' on the table?" He smirks and then it turns into a hopeful smile. "But you're gonna make it up t'me?"
no subject
"I'm afraid matters where my Father is concerned, awkward and terrible is all it can be," James says, nodding back rather gravely, but he smiles at the suggestion they could do something else. He hasn't been on a date in forever, but these past few weeks, getting to know Davin have been more interesting and fun than anyone else he's met in a long time. Davin is a good person, and he's easy to be around, which for James is saying something. He isn't really a people person. "I'll try. Did you not hear the part about me being really terrible at this? Because that was very true."
He pauses, considering Davin for a moment. "So. Are you saying yes? Or no? Maybe?"
no subject
"Well, with a sales pitch like that," Davin says with a laugh. He gets up and moves around to James' side of the booth, sitting next to him and smiling bashfully. "You're terrible at it an' I'm woefully inexperienced. An' probably also terrible. This should be fun."
He chuckles and leans over to give James a quick peck on the cheek. He's immediately embarrassed, because why, and he scoots back enough to put a few inches between them. "That was a yes, by the way."
no subject
He knows he made the right decision because he feels a few butterflies rumbling around in his stomach now, and it's been so long since he's even come close to being interested in anyone. It's just a nice feeling. "Good," he says, pausing for a moment before looking over at him again. "Is there any chance I convince you now that riding out this snowstorm in a club isn't the best option?"
no subject
"But we're already here," he says with a grin. "D'ya have somethin' better in mind?"
no subject
"You probably should've done the same."
no subject
"Oh, I dunno. I think it all worked out alright," Davin says with a smile, propping his chin up on his hand. "So, uh. What would we be doin' at your place?"
It's not that he doesn't want to sleep with James, because he does. But he thought maybe this would go different. Maybe it'd go in the right order.
no subject
He gives Davin a questioning look. "So? Do you want to come?" he asks.

He had prepared for the storm adequately, but he wishes he'd known that Davin would be coming over. But, atleast he has enough food and drinks to get them through the night because at this late hour, nearly everything would be closed. "I hope that's okay."
no subject
He gets his coat and pulls it on, buttoning it up and looking over at James with a soft smile. "That's okay. It'll be fun t'wait out a storm in your fairytale cottage."
They make their way out into the snow and Davin squints against the cold, pressing in closer to James.

He uses his key to unlock the doors to his car and climbs inside. After start the engine he waits a few seconds to turn on the heat.
no subject
He climbs into the car and settles back against the seat, holding out his hands when the heat kicks in. "Are ya sure you're okay t'drive that far? My place is a lot closer, if not nearly as nice."
