Night Swimming (Open)

It's been a trying day...week...month, if she's honest. The situation with Bach and the missing elders was getting on her last nerve.

She needed a swim.

Pulling her phone from her bag, she sent a text to a few of the more senior members of the siren community:

Night swimming tonight from sundown on the wrecking beach. All welcome. Food and drink provided. Please spread the word.

That should do it.

She send another note to her contacts at the police station so the unaware human element would be steered away. The wards would be up around the beach, discouraging vanilla humans from coming down there but it didn't hurt to have insurance in these matters.

Hopefully the sirens would come, maybe some of the witches. It would be nice to sprawl on the rocks for a few hours with friends.

Lara made an interested noise. "Oh?"

Smiles a little. "Well I don't have to worry about other sirens finding out, at least."

[asharpertongue]

She nodded and smiled gently. "You've been dormant your whole life?"

[mattthesiren]

Dormant -- you mean, incognito?

[asharpertongue]

"I mean that you don't use your powers."

[mattthesiren]

"Oh! No." He shakes his head emphatically. "No. I mean I used to make mistakes, but it's all good now."

[asharpertongue]

"Mistakes? Well...Everyone makes them occasionally. It happens. But as you say. You've got it under control." She smiled and relaxed a little. He was an anomaly and he intrigued her but he wasn't a threat. "So. No swimming?"

He sighs and gnaws his lip.

"Is everyone here like us?"

[asharpertongue]

Lara shook her head. "No. There are humans and witches here too."

[mattthesiren]

He wrinkles his nose. "Yeah, I don't think so. I'm not really comfortable spreading it around."

[asharpertongue]

She laughed. "Bit late for that."

[mattthesiren]

Matt scowls at her. "Any more than it already is, then."

He sighs, looking out over the water.

"So you're the Matriarch? Do you guys have a whole power structure? Is there lore?"

[asharpertongue]

Lara blinked at him. "No one taught you this? Of course, I'll tell you whatever you want to know but I'm just surprised."

[mattthesiren]

He sniffs, mock indignantly. "Hey, I know a lot of lore. I'm just not sure what version you guys subscribe to, is all."

[asharpertongue]

She holds up her hands in surrender. "Alright. I just didn't want to assume. And no. There's no specific power structure like there would be back in the day. I'm the matriarch so I have a little more power but I mostly just speak for us formally when things need to be discussed with the other species. And I settle fights between sirens that can't be settled by normal law." She smiled. "Mostly, I'm a figurehead."

"Sounds like you're doing a lot more than heading a figure to me." He smiles back.

[asharpertongue]

She laughed. "It's not easy work but it's life isn't it?" She looked at him. "And I like looking after my people."
